Objectives

Tamils going abroad, particularly to Gulf and Middle Eastern countries, often face legal issues related to employment, contracts and social welfare. The objectives of the Pravasi Legal Aid Cell are:

  • Provide necessary assistance in legal problems faced by non-resident Tamils.
  • Cover work-related, passport, visa and other social issues.
  • Include hospital treatment related to punishment and imprisonment.
  • Extend assistance to residents of Iraq and Middle Eastern countries in addition to GCC countries.

Procedure for Legal Aid

Appointment of Legal Liaison Officers - applications are being accepted from Tamil lawyers interested to work as Legal Liaison Officers of the Pravasi Legal Aid Cell.

  • Lawyers (male/female) who have practiced law for at least 2 years in Tamil Nadu.
  • Should have experience in handling legal issues in their respective countries.
  • The government has appointed a special committee to select the deserving candidates from among the applicants.
  • Legal Liaison Officers are invited to Saudi Arabia and Qatar for the initial deployment.

Eligibility for Legal Aid

Non-Resident Tamils facing legal problems abroad are eligible for assistance from the Pravasi Legal Aid Cell. Eligibility criteria include:

  • Must be a Non-Resident Tamil registered with the NRT Welfare Board.
  • Case must be of a work-related, passport, visa or social nature.
  • Must produce valid documentation of the issue.
  • Assistance is provided in coordination with the respective Indian Missions abroad.
